THE HEALING PROPERTIES OF ALOE VERA.

Aloe Vera has been believed to be the cure for so many wounds for thousands of years. Although, the succulent plant belonging to the lily family and is related to the onion, garlic, and asparagus it looks like a cactus plant. It has been evaluated that the aloe was also used for treatment in 2100 BC which was discovered on a clay tablet.

A German Egyptologist bought a papyrus in 1862, which pointed out that Aloe Vera was used for the herbal preparation.

Apart from Egyptians, even Romans, Greeks, Arabs and Indians also recognized the Aloe Vera back then and the topmost physicians of that time also included the plant in their therapeutic armories. Even the Egyptian queens like Nefertiti and Cleopatra used Aloe Vera for their beauty treatment and it is said that the purpose of Alexandra the Great for capturing the Socotra Island was to get the Aloe Vera for treating the wounds of his soldiers.

 

THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF ALOE VERA.

 

Aloe Vera consists of about 99 to 99.5% of water and its pH is 4.5. The rest of the part contains about 75 special components described below:

 

Vitamins:

          Aloe Vera contains Vitamins A, B(thiamine), B2, C, F plus niacin, choline and folic acid.

Enzymes:

         Aloe Vera is a cure for digestion as the amylase and lipase are the biochemical catalysts that break down fats and sugars. A carboxy-peptidase is an enzyme which proves to be an anesthesia by producing its anti-inflammatory effect during the inflammatory process.

Minerals:

          The Aloe Plant is rich in minerals as it contains all the minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, chromium and iron. In an allergic reaction, the factor causing itching & pain is the histamine which may be prevented by the magnesium lactate in an Aloe Plant.

 

Sugars:

        The mucilage layer of the plant consists of sugars surrounding the gel. The 25% of the solid fraction comprises of sugars including mono and polysaccharides. The long-chain polysaccharides help in preventing the “leaky-gut-syndrome” and they are competent of enhancing the immune system.

Anthraquinones:

        The compounds like Barbaloin, Isobarbaloin, and Anthrone –C –glycosides & chromosomes are found in the bitter aloes. A large amount of these compounds contains the purgative effect when in a large amount and the analgesic effect when in a lesser amount.  They are able to absorb the ultraviolet rays and reduce the hyper-pigmentation.

 

Apart from these, the saponins have antiseptic properties, the Salicylic acid posses antibacterial effects which may heal the wounds of necrotic tissues and there are about 20 necessary amino acids which are rich in proteins.    

 

HOW IS ALOE VERA THIS EFFICIENT?

 

The most surprising factor is that the Aloe Vera consumed in a smaller quantity may also reveal its healing effects while in the orthodox medicines it is necessary that all the biologically active substances must be of equal composition.

 

ALOE VERA’S PRIMARY SITES OF ACTION:

  • Epithelial tissues:

The layer which fills up the cavity between the surface and the body is known as epithelium layer. The skin is also an epithelial surface. Apart from the solid organs, Aloe Vera also proves to be healing for these epithelial tissues that cover the nose, lungs, mouth, sinus etc.

  • Immune System:

The Aloe Vera also affects the cytokine system which results in the modulation of the immune system. The polymannose sugar is also been extracted for the treatment of the HIV (AIDS) and leukemia in cats.
